When men were crucified, the Romans wrote in Hebrew, Latin, and Greek, on a sign above the victim, what the person was actually condemned of doing (John 19:20). Luke 23:38 states that the sign said “This is the king of the Jews”.

The chief priests were obviously not happy with what the Romans wrote, because they said “Do not write “The King of the Jews”, but that “he said, I am the King of the Jews”, to which Pilate answered “What I have written, I have written” (John 19:21-22).

By this time Pilate had probably had enough of the chief priests, who had cajoled him into crucifying an innocent man and letting a murderer (Barabbas) go free. It worked out prophetically since Jesus is the King of the Jews, in fact He is King of the Universe.
